Love, Lattes and Mutants by Sandra Cox
High school is hard enough without having to hide who you truly are. Afraid each day that someone might find out that you aren’t whom you seem to be day in and day out. Piper Dunn has to had herself under rose colored glasses (not the good kind), buggy clothes, and deepens her voice so people don’t notice her and discover her secret. That secret is that she has dolphin DNA. Her mother had escaped from a lab where she was teased and had surgeries. The Dunn family find her and took her in as a daughter their son fell in love with her they got married and had Piper. when she was little her parents died in a car accident and now it’s just her, her grandfather, and her true love- the ocean. Piper spends her days at school going undetected and her nights saving the ocean life. But that’s all about to change after she becomes friends with the new kids in school. Twins Holly and Tyler are trying to figure out the mystery that is Piper especially Tyler who gives Piper butterflies and keeps fighting his way into her life. When he is just about to get close enough to Piper she gets captured by the very people who made her mom. There she meets a fellow Dolph Joel. With their Like Blood it’s hard to fight the pull she has towards him. But Piper needs to escape along with the dolphin’s that they have captured and are testing on. Can Piper get back to her grandfather? Can she really escape just like her mother did all those years ago?
Okay, so this book wasn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be and I feel like how Piper acts in her geek apparel is a little much. I think she can act somewhat like a normal teenage and have friends if she wants. I know she doesn’t want to be found but I feel like if she really doesn’t want to be caught then she should have avoided the traps that were obviously set for her! I think that when some sees that I girl can hold her breath under water for half an hour and can swim really fast when they try to catch her is more obvious than if she dressed like a normal girl at school. Just saying. I really did enjoy the book. Tyler and his family life are so unreal but once you read the next book you start to see why he mentions what he does. Although, if I had an extremely dangerous uncle I’m sure I wouldn’t tell people and my parents sure as heck wouldn’t let me go visit them! I love how Tyler teaches her self-defense it’s absolutely sweet but he does get a little stalkerish, but what teenager isn’t. I’m sure I’ve gone on a few stake outs with my friends when she liked a boy. I’m still down for a good stake out!
My favorite part of the book is when Tyler comes over the next day after “Gramps” saves him and he is determine to prove to Piper that he knows she was the one who saved him. How he proves will make the butterflies in your stomach take off!
I give this book a 3 star rating. Good one time read I may read it again because it really is a pretty original book and I love the idea of Dolph mutants. Make me think of mermaids.
