The Semester of Our Discontent

The Semester of Our Discontent (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery Book 1) by Cynthia Kuhn

There will be a spoiler in this post.

“English professor Lila Maclean is thrilled about her new job at prestigious Stonedale University, until she finds one of her colleagues dead. She soon learns that everyone, from the chancellor to the detective working the case, believes Lila—or someone she is protecting—may be responsible for the horrific event, so she assigns herself the task of identifying the killer.

More attacks on professors follow, the only connection a curious symbol at each of the crime scenes. Putting her scholarly skills to the test, Lila gathers evidence, but her search is complicated by an unexpected nemesis, a suspicious investigator, and an ominous secret society. Rather than earning an “A” for effort, she receives a threat featuring the mysterious emblem and must act quickly to avoid failing her assignment…and becoming the next victim.”

Hey everyone sorry I haven’t posted a review in a while! I’ve been busy with life and now with the Read Along I am hosting on my Facebook Group Page! We are having a blast!

Last night and this morning I read The Semester of Our Discontent. and I really did like the book. I loved the mystery and how there was a discovery of the secret society “The Blair Rose”. At the end of the book, she and a co worker kiss and though it was obvious she was going to make him the love interested there wasn’t any chemistry and when they kissed it seems very awkward! I almost wish she wouldn’t have had a love interested at all. The mystery was wonderful and I loved how she brought so much lit into the story. I almost felt like the romance in the book was an afterthought and she just added it in there. It didn’t flow with the book. and I was a little disappointed when they kissed. There wasn’t any detail about how it made her felt at all. I almost wished they would have hugged because that would have been perfect. it would have be friendly and then she could have expanded the romance in the next book. But because of this I almost don’t want to read the next book because it was just weird.

I almost don’t know where to go from here. Also I wish she would have went into more detail while describing the characters. I mean I was able to fill in the blanks but I wanted more! I also would have loved more of the Detective Archer. He was an active character in solving the case I wish we could have heard more about him.

Now, I did love how she brought attention to the women writers of the past. I loved it and have even added some books to my never ending reading list. I also loved how the female characters were all very string and independent. I most defiantly passes the Bechdel test.

I give this book 3 stars! I did enjoy the mystery and will probably read the next book later on. I just wish there wasn’t any romance just yet.
